He is the retired President and CEO of Boston Scientific Corporation, where he served from 1999 to 2009, was previously President and CEO of Biogen Inc. (and its President and COO from 1994 to 1997), and earlier spent 22 years with Baxter International Inc., rising from Financial Analyst to President and Chief Operating Officer.

He holds a Bachelor's Degree from Harvard College and an MBA from Harvard Business School, and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.
