David S. Wilkes, M.D., is an independent director of Baxter International, serving on the Board since 2021. He serves on the Nominating, Corporate Governance and Public Policy Committee and the Quality and Regulatory Compliance Committee. He is a distinguished critical care specialist and pulmonary medicine expert with over 35 years of experience in academia, research and institutional leadership.
Dr. Wilkes is the former Dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, serving as Dean from 2015 to 2021 and currently as Dean Emeritus. He earlier served at the Indiana University School of Medicine as Executive Associate Director for Research Affairs and as the August M. Watanabe Professor of Medical Research from 2009 to 2015. Since 2006, he has been Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of ImmuneWorks Inc., a biotechnology start-up company.
Since 2006, Dr. Wilkes has served as the National Director of the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He is a military veteran, having served three years as a major in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps, and in 2020 was elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
